Splurging on a massive home in a remote Hawaiian getaway would hardly make a dent in your fortune if you’re the world’s wealthiest person. And that’s exactly what Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez, did. The couple allegedly paid an estimated US$78 million for a tropical estate in La Perouse Bay on the island of Maui.

The remote property covers four hectares (14 acres) of land. While there isn’t much information about the grounds, the sprawling main house is said to be around 4,500 square feet and includes an outdoor kitchen with ocean views.

It is accompanied by a 1,700-square-foot guest house, several smaller structures, and a 700-square-foot swimming pool. In addition, the house is surrounded by lush lawns and dozens of palm trees.

The oceanfront estate is located on Maui’s sparsely populated southwestern side, far from Kahului, the island’s largest city. The house is located approximately 19 kilometres (12 miles) south of Kihei, the nearest major city, and is surrounded by state parkland and rocky lava fields.

According to media reports, the property was originally owned by Colorado-based energy businessman Doug Schatz, who purchased it with his business partners in 1996 for US$4.2 million, according to Dirt.com. Later that year, Schatz and his wife purchased the entire estate and spent thousands more to renovate it to their liking.

Bezos and Sánchez’s bittersweet romance

In 2019, after divorcing his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, Bezos met and fell in love with news anchor Sánchez.

However, the couple has had its fair share of controversies over the years, including leaked texts, blackmail, and, of course, the billion-dollar divorce. According to The Guardian, the Amazon founder accused the owner of The National Enquirer of “extortion and blackmail” in 2019 after the tabloid newspaper allegedly threatened to publish intimate photos and text messages between Bezos and Sánchez.

The tabloid owner’s relationship with former US President Donald Trump, Lauren’s brother Michael Sánchez’s involvement, and several other factors all became the talk of the town around the same time.

The celebrity couple, on the other hand, appears to have moved on. Bezos and Sanchez are frequently seen cruising around the world. According to The Daily Mail, they made their first public appearance as a couple at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London, shortly after the billionaire’s divorce in July 2019.

Bezos and Sanchez were also spotted strolling through St. Tropez and cruising off the coast of Spain, in the Balearic Islands, aboard media mogul David Geffen’s superyacht in August 2019. Since then, the duo has made several public appearances, including one in India.

But now all eyes are on the couple’s visit to their new, opulent Maui home. Pacific Business News broke the news of Bezos and Sánchez’s new purchase. According to a source close to the couple, “Jeff and Lauren love Maui, have a home on the island, visit frequently, and want to be a part of supporting the local community.”

According to Insider, Bezos also reportedly purchased the Warner estate in Beverly Hills for US$165 million in February 2020.
