Since making his acting debut in 1984’s Nightmare on Elm Street, Johnny Depp, who is renowned for being a rather dark and eccentric actor, has seemed to have gone with his gut when choosing character roles. Before getting his big break, he played in various garage bands, got married young, and dropped out of his Florida high school at the age of 15.

Depp and his then-wife, makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, traveled to Los Angeles, and it was there that they by chance—and good fortune—met Nicolas Cage. They clicked right away, and Cage recommended to his new friend that they should pursue acting.

This resulted in Depp’s first film role and his quick success in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Sleepy Hollow, and Edward Scissorhands. He subsequently progressed to more serious roles in Blow, Public Enemies, and Black Mass where he played narcotics and gangster criminals.
