Martin’s arrival is opportune to provide a much-needed boost to an offensive line that has been in the limelight for the first three weeks of training camp.
It not only addresses the greatest front office concern while making things easy for upcoming contract extensions with young players, but it also gives Mike McCarthy back his “best five” on the offensive line to protect Dak Prescott.
The six-time All-Pro will see an increase in his salary from $13.5 million in 2023 and $14 million in 2024 to north of $18 million in both years thanks to a reworked deal. Since this is a restructuring and not an extension, the Cowboys are free to continue and/or initiate contract talks with young stars like CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, Tony Pollard, and others.
When looking at the trade objectively, it is beneficial to both parties. Martin is paid at the same rate as the best guards in the league. The front office and Jerry Jones, who told Martin during discussions that they need the money “to pay [Micah] Parsons,” will not be affected by the amount of money that will be given to Parsons, Lamb, and the rest of the team.
And with nearly $18 million in salary room in 2023, the Cowboys may spend freely on a kicker, offensive lineman, or any position of need.
Let’s talk about the football part now.
Up front, things have been rough throughout training camp and into the first preseason game, but several players eventually found their footing. However, it is doubtful that the time Martin was gone was used effectively on either the evaluation of a prospective successor at right guard or the identification of a viable depth option at the position.
Martin’s return not only provides an extra buffer for answering these problems, but also brings the largest player-leader back to the position group to continue working on these issues.
Although his presence has a significant influence, it is overshadowed by other factors such as cap space flexibility, diminished offensive line mobility, and thorny negotiations.
The agreement being reached brings back one of the finest to ever wear The Star to the field for a season that now has the best chance to achieve the sport’s ultimate ambition, on a legendary team that has seen some great guardians line up in the trenches throughout its history.
