NBA great Tracy McGrady joined Kevin Garnett on KG Certified to talk about basketball in general and the domination of Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets in particular. With all the talk around Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers winning the MVP title at the expense of Nikola Jokic, Tracy McGrady broke down the key differences between the two players.
McGrady responded to Garnett’s question about whether Embiid can match Jokic’s performance by saying, “I don’t think he has the endurance of doing it for 82 games… Jokic is the league’s top performer. He tops the league in terms of performance. “What can’t he do?”
While Jokic excels at staying on the court for long stretches of time, durability has always been a concern for Embiid throughout his NBA career. Embiid has played in only 394 regular season games since making his NBA debut in 2016, whereas Jokic has played in 516. Amazingly, Jokic appeared in only 69 regular season games in 2017–18, the fewest of any season in his career.
While McGrady did bring up durability as an aspect to consider when comparing Jokic and Embiid, it is far from the only one. Jokic has demonstrated a postseason dominance that Embiid has not been able to match. Jokic’s historic postseason performance put an end to any debate over who was the better player between Embiid and him at the end of the regular season.
