Rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will be out for the Cowboys’ season opener against the Giants and likely beyond.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Overshown tore his ACL on Saturday night while playing the Seahawks.
The first-year player was supposed to get an MRI on Sunday.
Dallas won 22-14, but third-round selection Overshown was injured tackle Seattle running back Zach Charbonnet.
Overshown tried to get up after what appeared to be a regular play, but he grasped at his knee.
Reports from training camp indicated that Overshown was on track to play a role on defense, though it is unclear exactly on the depth chart he would have been placed.
In the first preseason game, he made six tackles and added three more before being wounded.
Apparently, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters, “We talked about him seems like almost every day,” as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Cowboys Country. “He was on the rise… Has great leadership for such a young guy, especially for a linebacker.
Simply optimistic, then.
The Cowboys’ 4-3 defense is likely to begin with Leighton Vander Esch, Damone Clark, and Jabril Cox, although Overshown may have earned a lot of playing time in the rotation.
Overshown tweeted “Still Blessed” on Saturday night, along with an image of crossed arms.
Shortly after Overshown’s injuries, a video appeared showing him walking unassisted.
Saying, “You never want to see any of your guys get hurt,” McCarthy emphasized the need of keeping everyone safe. This is the challenge of the games. We lost a couple young individuals, and all you can do is pray that the [MRI] will show positive results.
