Mason Greenwood may choose to follow the well-trodden path to the Saudi Pro League after his Manchester United axing.

United revealed on Monday (August 21) the 21-year-old will not play for the club again after completing an internal investigation into his behaviour. Greenwood had been suspended by the side since his arrest in January 2022.

Police announced in February this year that charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault, had been dropped against the forward. Yet fan and potential sponsorship backlash prompted the red Devils to announce the academy graduate’s departure after 14 years with the club.

Greenwood responded by releasing his own statement on social media, in which he confirmed his desire to continue playing football somewhere else.

He said: “I intend to be a better footballer, but most importantly a good father, a better person, and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch.”

 

 

 

 

It remains unclear where the former England international will look to go – and indeed which clubs would consider signing him – with sides in Turkey and Italy reportedly having shown interest.

Greenwood was set to earn £75,000-a-week at United until 2025. While there are few clubs that could offer him such a sum, the Saudi Pro League could emerge as a destination for the former United man as he looks to rebuild his career abroad.

Should they decide to come in for Greenwood, several Saudi clubs would be able to pay a sum that exceeds his wages. The Englishman’s potential salary will not come anywhere near the gargantuan sums received by the likes of former teammate Cristiano ronaldo – who is thought to be earning £173million-per-year at Al-Nassr.

Yet the club’s second highest earner – Marcelo Brozovic – still rakes in a staggering £184,000-per-week. Third on Al-Nassr’s wage book is another of Greenwood’s former United teammates in Alex Telles, who made the switch to the Middle-East this summer.

Wherever Greenwood ends up, he is expected to take some time to get up to speed following his one-and-a-half year absence from professional football.
