QB Patrick Mahomes assumed defensive tackle Chris Jones of the Chiefs would have returned to the building by this point when Jones decided to skip training camp.
At his presser on Wednesday, Mahomes stated as much.
Jones, who is looking for a new deal, has now stated that he might not report until Week 8.
In spite of this, Mahomes stated on Wednesday that he “not necessarily” expected to begin the regular season without the prominent defensive tackle.
Because everyone wants to earn money to support their entire family and other obligations, Mahomes acknowledged that the topic of contracts is difficult to discuss. But I am aware of Chris’ devotion to the Chiefs. He enjoys being a part of this group. I simply try to remain out of it while telling Chris that I love him and that he will always be welcomed back with open arms.
We are aware that he is putting in the necessary work to resume playing at his previous level of dominance.
Mahomes highlighted that Jones’ absence is only a part of the contract negotiation process, with the Chiefs opening the 2023 season two weeks from Thursday against the Lions.
Mahomes stated, “I’m not looking down on him for anything like that. He is attempting to do tasks that he feels must be completed immediately. I thus respect his choice. And like I already said, we’ll be happy to see him when he returns. He is a crucial component of my company, and I’m happy to have him on my team.
Mahomes has maintained contact with Jones despite head coach Andy Reid’s Wednesday claim that there hasn’t been any communication between Jones and the team.
He’s in high spirits, according to Mahomes. “Whenever this stuff arises, I believe it is a difficult period for all players because you want to play and be on the field. You want to take care of your family, yet at the same time. Finding the ideal location and the appropriate location at the appropriate moment are therefore key.
It has no negative effects on our relationships with him. We honor his choice. But in the meanwhile, once he returns, we’ll welcome him with open arms and know that he’ll be a crucial teammate to support us as we strive to contend for the Super Bowl once more.
Jones recently had what was likely his best year professionally. He played 80 percent of Kansas City’s defensive snaps in 17 games and registered 15.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, and 29 quarterback hits. In three postseason games as the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII, he added another 2.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, and six quarterback hits.
