Philadelphia Eagles Finalize Roster Ahead of Regular Season Opener

With the preseason now over, the Philadelphia Eagles have until Tuesday afternoon to finalize their roster and cut it down to 53 players. Beat writers Zach Berman and Bo Wulf weigh in with their predictions on who will make the cut for each position group.

At quarterback, both Berman and Wulf agree that Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota, and Tanner McKee will be the three quarterbacks on the roster. While McKee has shown promise, the consensus is that he will likely be a developmental player behind Hurts and Mariota.

Moving on to the running back position, Berman suggests that D’Andre Swift, Kenneth Gainwell, Rashaad Penny, and Boston Scott will make the final roster. However, he mentions that Trey Sermon could be a candidate to return on the practice squad. Wulf shares the same four running backs but adds that Sermon could potentially make a return if needed.

When it comes to wide receivers, both writers agree on A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins, and Olamide Zaccheaus making the cut. However, Berman believes the team will scan the waiver wire for a fifth receiver, possibly a big-bodied option, while Wulf suggests that they might add someone before the regular season begins.

At tight end, Berman and Wulf both predict that Dallas Goedert, Jack Stoll, and Grant Calcaterra will be the three players kept on the roster. Berman mentions that the team might have wanted to keep Tyree Jackson, but opted for more depth on the defensive line.

They include Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Jason Kelce, Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, Tyler Steen, Jack Driscoll, Fred Johnson, and Sua Opeta. Berman notes that Opeta’s spot might be in question, but the team leans towards keeping linemen in close decisions.

On the defensive side, at edge rusher, both writers agree on Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Nolan Smith, and Kyron Johnson making the final roster. Berman suggests that Patrick Johnson could be the sixth option, while Wulf mentions that this spot could also go to a fourth linebacker or seventh cornerback.
