Report: Former Penn State Football Quarterback Trace McSorley Released By New England Patriots

Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has been let go by the New England Patriots, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. McSorley’s departure comes after he joined the Patriots in April.

During his time at Penn State from 2014 to 2018, McSorley held the starting quarterback position for three years. He made significant contributions to the Nittany Lions, surpassing Christian Hackenberg’s previous record of 8,457 passing yards to become the program’s all-time leader in passing yards. McSorley concluded his college career with an impressive 9,899 passing yards.

Notably, McSorley played a pivotal role in guiding Penn State to a Big Ten Championship in 2016 and securing a victory in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl. His standout performance in the Fiesta Bowl set a new record for the highest total yardage in a bowl game in Penn State’s history.

After being drafted in 2019 by the Baltimore Ravens, McSorley waited until December 25, 2022, to earn his first NFL start with the Arizona Cardinals. Following the 2022 season, McSorley reunited with his former Penn State head coach, Bill O’Brien, who now serves as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots.
