The iconic Chartwell mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California (USA) has just been sold for about 150 million USD, breaking the record for the most expensive house in this state.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the buyer is the son of media billionaire Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch. Once listed for sale for $350 million, the Chartwell mansion became the most expensive house in California and the second most expensive in the United States. The title of most expensive house in the US currently belongs to the New York penthouse of billionaire investor Ken Griffin, purchased for 238 million USD in January 2019.
The son of billionaire Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch (left) is the new owner of the Chartwell mansion. Lachlan Murdoch is co-chairman at his father’s company, News Corp. This is the company behind many newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.
Chartwell was once for sale for $350 million.
Chartwell mansion is located on an area of more than 4 hectares of land in Bel Air – known as the rich area in Los Angeles city.
Over 2,300 square feet, Chartwell has 18 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms and a ballroom. This mansion was built in the 1930s by engineer Lynn Atkinson and later sold to billionaire A. Jerrold Perenchio, owner of Univision television company.
Perenchio hired French designer Henri Samuel to renovate much of the mansion in the 18th-century French neoclassical style.
