What Happened: Cristiano Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has secured the contract to construct a new ‘City of Padel’ in Oeiras, Portugal, awarded by the Portuguese Padel Federation.
This coastal town near Lisbon will host the complex, capable of hosting international padel competitions. Ronaldo’s company, ‘CR7,’ is investing €5 million (£4.3m/$5.4m) in this project.
The Bigger Picture: Ronaldo is a known enthusiast of padel, a fast-growing sport that shares similarities with tennis but is played exclusively in doubles format within walled courts using smaller, stringless rackets.
What They Said: Ricardo Oliveira, the president of the Portuguese Padel Federation, expressed his delight, stating, “It’s a dream come true. We couldn’t have better partners— a great businessman and the world’s best sportsman.
We can confidently say that the facilities will be unparalleled, solidifying Portugal’s status as an international padel powerhouse.”
What’s Next for Ronaldo: Ronaldo will return to action on the field as his club, Al-Nassr, faces Al-Raed in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday.
