Liverpool is reportedly preparing an offer to sign a promising new defender in January, and this player is already plying his trade in the Premier League with Brentford.
In 2023, Liverpool spent a total of £145 million on four new midfield signings during the summer transfer window. These signings include Alexis Mac Allister (£35 million), Dominik Szoboszlai (£60 million), Wataru Endo (£16 million), and Ryan Gravenberch (£34 million). While Liverpool strengthened their central midfield, there’s another area that needs attention in the upcoming transfer window.
Currently, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only natural right-back available to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. It has become evident that Liverpool needs cover and competition for this position, especially following Alexander-Arnold’s recent spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. It appears that Klopp has already identified a potential candidate for this role.
Back in April, Brentford’s Aaron Hickey emerged as a target for Manchester City, although a deal did not materialize over the summer. This failed transfer attempt by Manchester City has opened the door for other clubs, including those on Merseyside.
Despite having three years left on his contract with Brentford, Hickey’s performances this season have reportedly impressed the FSG (Fenway Sports Group) leadership to the extent that they are considering making an approach for the 21-year-old at the beginning of 2024.
Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United are reportedly “ready to make bids” for Hickey in the January transfer window, and he has also garnered interest from Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Brentford is expected to demand a fee around £50 million for their prized asset before entering into negotiations with any potential suitors.
Hickey joined Brentford from Serie A side Bologna for a reported fee of £18 million. His performance in 33 appearances at the Community Stadium has justified his worth. Hickey currently averages 2.2 tackles and 1.2 clearances per Premier League game, boasting a 90.9% pass success rate.
His versatility allows him to play in various positions across the field. He has been involved in nine goals (six goals and three assists) since the start of his career, showcasing his ability to create chances for himself and his teammates.
Additionally, Hickey shares the same agent, PLG, as Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, potentially providing Liverpool with an advantage in negotiations due to this existing connection.
