The news that a close friend of Ja Morant’s has an arrest warrant out for him in connection with an argument the two had with a young basketball player in 2022 at the Memphis Grizzlies star’s estate has added to the hectic start to his summer.
The Shelby County district attorney’s office released a statement regarding Davonte Pack, who has been referred to by All-Star player Kevin Durant as “my brother.” Pack and the adolescent are accused of punching the teenager during the July 2022 altercation. Pack has been charged with simple assault.
According to online records, the warrant for Pack, 24, was obtained on Monday. On the same day, attorneys representing Morant argued in civil court that Morant should be excluded from the kid’s lawsuit because the youngster threw a basketball at Morant, hitting Morant in the jaw, and Pack acted in self-defense.When the complaint was filed, Morant’s accuser was just 17 years old. Morant and Pack are accused of assault, careless endangerment, emotional distress inflicted, and abuse or neglect. The plaintiff, now eighteen-year-old Joshua Holloway, was named in an amended complaint.
Morant filed a countersuit in April, charging Holloway with assault, violence, and slander.
In April, Holloway, who has committed to play basketball at Samford for college, spoke with Memphis’ WREG about the countersuits.
“I really try to ignore stuff that comes out because I know everyone has an opinion, so I just try to stay within myself,” Holloway stated.
“I’m not afraid of anything.” God is trustworthy and has my back. I don’t need to worry about anything. Whatever happens, I’m still going to accomplish my goal.
Morant has not been the subject of any criminal charges. Calls and emails requesting comment on the warrant were not immediately answered by the attorneys defending Morant and Pack in the lawsuit.
before a second video of Morant displaying a weapon went viral online, the NBA suspended him for 25 games before the new season got underway. The footage of Morant flashing a weapon in a Denver-area strip club was posted in March, following his completion of an eight-game suspension. In that video, the player is seen sitting in the passenger seat of a car.
Morant expressed regret for both events.Following an incident in Memphis on January 29 that he said resulted in the Pack being barred from home games for a year, Morant’s conduct were also looked at.
That incident happened after the Indiana Pacers game. Several Pacers players claimed to have seen a red dot directed at them, according to The Indianapolis Star and USA Today, which cited anonymous sources. The Athletic claimed that a Pacers security guard thought the laser was mounted to a gun.
The NBA said its inquiry turned up no proof that anyone had been threatened with a weapon, but it did confirm that certain people were prohibited from entering the venue.
‘The reports create this horrible image on me and my fam. & banned my brother from home games for a year,’ tweeted Morant in response to the event. astonishing Barking occurred between Pacers players and Morant’s companions who were sitting near the sidelines during the game on January 29. The Pacers bench players were yelling at Pack as he was led out of the arena.
The NBA fined Morant 25 games, which Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said last month “was appropriate.” Morant now has to alter his behavior, which resulted in two bans in as many months.
Following Thursday night’s NBA draft, the vice president of basketball operations for the Grizzlies made the remarks.
According to Kleiman, Morant, the No. 2 overall pick in 2019 and the 2020 Rookie of the Year, has a history of “problematic behavior.” This most recent event is part of that trend.
“Until he follows through, it doesn’t matter at this point,” Kleiman stated. Words don’t really matter to me. Ja needs to give proof.
