As Klay Thompson approaches the final year of his contract with the Warriors, a report claims that there has been “no progress” toward a new agreement up to this point.
The 33-year-old Thompson has been with the team for his whole 12-year career, and he has been a key player in each of Golden State’s four championships since 2015.
However, Thompson’s status beyond 2023–24 is uncertain as the NBA season draws near.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on NBA Countdown, “They are both still apart on years and money, and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal.”
Thompson will earn a basic salary of $43.2 million this season after agreeing to a five-year, $189.9 million contract with the team in 2019, according to Spotrac.
The shooter, who has been selected an All-Star five times, missed time from June 2019 to January 2022 because of knee and Achilles problems.
Last season, he participated in all 69 games and averaged 21.9 points per game, leading the league in three-point field goals made.
Given his age and recent history of injuries, it is unclear how much money the Warriors will be willing to invest in him.
This summer, the organization extended the contract of defensive mainstay Draymond Green for four years at a cost of $100 million.
Thompson and Green are of the same age.
The previous season, the Lakers defeated the Warriors in the conference semifinals.
On October 24, they take on the Suns to start the season.
