The preseason clash between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns on Thursday offered little insight into what might transpire if these star-studded teams were to meet in the playoffs.
Preseason basketball differs significantly from regular-season and postseason intensity. The Suns, in their revamped form, were missing key players like Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, leaving Kevin Durant as the sole member of their potentially dominant Big Three. Meanwhile, the Lakers’ LeBron James and Anthony Davis were benched midway through the third quarter by Coach Darvin Ham, allowing the Suns to extend their lead against the Lakers’ bench players.
One noteworthy aspect of Thursday’s preseason game that could be indicative of future matchups in the 2023-24 season was Austin Reaves showcasing his skills against Grayson Allen.
Reaves has solidified his position as the Lakers’ third offensive option this season, following an impressive 2022-23 campaign and a strong performance for Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Even when sharing the court with superstars like James, Durant, Booker, Davis, and Beal, Reaves displays a level of ball-handling and playmaking that can leave overwhelmed defenders feeling embarrassed and leave spectators in awe. It’s safe to say that he is rapidly emerging as one of the most skilled players in basketball.
Allen, on the other hand, is not known for his ability to defend against such high-caliber playmakers, a vulnerability that has been exposed during past playoff matchups with the Milwaukee Bucks. It wouldn’t be surprising if he faces similar challenges with the Suns in the upcoming playoffs, especially when required to navigate screens while contending with the Suns’ drop defense.
On-ball defense appears to be a significant question mark for the Suns this season. At the very least, Frank Vogel and his coaching staff are likely aware that Grayson Allen may not be the solution to that puzzle.
