In exchange for a Day 2 selection, Washington’s top pass rusher is traveling to Chicago.
According to numerous sources, the Chicago Bears will receive great pass rusher Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that in exchange for Sweat, Washington will receive a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Given that Sweat’s current deal is coming to an end, the Bears’ intention to sign him to a long-term extension is suggested by the trade to Chicago. They will have more than enough salary cap space in the offseason to sign Sweat to the deal he wants, given that they are predicted to have the most available.
The Bears added a lot of players during the offseason, but they neglected to make significant progress at the defensive end, where they lacked an impact player off the edge. Certainly, Sweat satisfies that requirement and provides them with a proven playmaker at a premium position rather than just another lottery pick on the second day of the following year’s draft.
Chicago now has one of the poorest records in the league, thus Washington is able to add a second-round pick that will almost certainly be high in the draft order. Getting a high draft pick to help address other needs on the team is a significant victory for the Commanders, especially because Sweat was never expected to re-sign a long-term deal to stay in Washington in the first place.
