The New York Knicks may or may not be impacted by some shocking news that was announced this past weekend at the top of the draft board. The minor knee surgery that Murray State point guard Ja Morant is scheduled to have on Monday is reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Memphis Grizzlies, who own the second choice in the draft, are set on signing Julius Randolph, and Woj reiterates that nothing will change their decision, but it is still worth keeping an eye on this small process. Nothing in this draft is set in stone, barring the Pelicans selecting Zion Williamson at number one.
As for R.J. Barrett, the projected third pick, it seems like he’s doing all in his power to stay away from Memphis. He has already stated in the open that he would rather go fourth to the Lakers or third to the Knicks. He has also turned down the Grizzlies’ offer for a private workout.
Although my opinion of Barrett isn’t all that strong, I think he has more promise than Morant. And the idea of Memphis altering their mind on draft night would send shivers down my spine if I was a real Barrett believer. It would not be the first time, after all, that a predicted draft pick attempted to make his way to New York only to be selected one position ahead of schedule (see: Curry, Steph).
