In the past week, Lakers guard Austin Reaves hasn’t displayed the same level of playmaking prowess that characterized his performance throughout November.
Despite a decrease in assists, with only one game recording four assists in the last four games, Reaves maintains an average of 4.7 assists per game for the season. Beyond his passing stats, Reaves consistently contributes 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Remarkably, Reaves’ production has seen an uptick since his move to the bench. Despite playing fewer minutes per game, he notches higher averages in both points and assists as a reserve. Moreover, his shooting efficiency has improved noticeably.
As a starter, Reaves shot at 41.6 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from three, whereas coming off the bench, he boasts shooting percentages of 50 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Additionally, his free throw percentage has risen by nearly seven percentage points.
The decision to bring Reaves off the bench has not only positively impacted his individual performance but has also translated into team success. In the 13 games where he served as a reserve, the Lakers achieved a 9-4 record, contrasting with their 3-5 start with Reaves in the starting lineup.
There is potential for further improvement in Reaves’ game, particularly in enhancing his 3-point accuracy. Despite a slightly subdued performance compared to the previous season, Reaves remains a valuable contributor off the bench, and a boost in his long-range shooting could elevate his overall impact.
