Ferrari recalls more than 20,000 supercars because of brake errors

The Italian automaker is recalling a number of vehicle models from 2005 to the present, including well-known supercars like the F60 America and LaFerrari.

The total number of cars recalled in this round is 23,555, accounting for the vast majority of Ferrari’s fleet. Many car models are limited editions that cost millions of dollars.

The reason for the recall, as announced by Ferrari, is brake failure. Vehicles may suffer from partial or total brake failure. The brake fluid reservoir cap does not properly vent air, resulting in a vacuum in the brake system that leaks brake fluid. Inadequate brake fluid impairs the vehicle’s ability to brake properly.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published the issues as well as a list of each affected vehicle model.

The documents suggest replacing the problematic brake reservoir cap with a modified cap that allows for proper ventilation.

To ensure that affected vehicles are operated safely, software that monitors brake fluid levels will be installed as part of the process. On September 24, dealers and owners will be notified.

Ferrari owners are urged to heed the brake fluid warning. In the event of a warning, the vehicle should not be driven and the owner should contact a Ferrari service center to arrange for the vehicle to be towed to the nearest dealer. Owners can also check the NHTSA’s recall notices website to see if their vehicle is affected.

Previously, in October, a similar recall concerning the risk of brake failure for certain 2010-2015 Ferrari 458s and 2016-2019 Ferrari 488s, totaling nearly 10,000 vehicles, was announced.

The recall comes just as Ferrari announced second-quarter profits, sales, and shipments that were all up more than 20% year on year on a quarterly record. Net orders also set a new high in the third quarter.

In the second quarter, the company shipped 3,455 vehicles. The increase was 29% higher than the previous year, owing to strong demand for the V8-powered Portofino M convertible and mid-engine F8 sports car. In addition, production of the new V6-powered 296 GTB hybrid sports car began recently.
