Bronny James’ college career hasn’t exactly started on a high note.
The much-publicized guard, who returned to the basketball court last Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest in July, finished with just five points, two rebounds, and two turnovers in a 91-75 loss to Auburn.
In 14 minutes off the bench, he shot 1-of-4 from the field and 0-of-2 from three. He also converted three of his four free-throw attempts.
Meanwhile, the Trojans have now lost three straight games.
Getting James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, back on the court has been the Trojans’ biggest storyline this season, and he expressed his gratitude last weekend for the support and care he received during his cardiac arrest recovery.
“I just want to say that I’m thankful for everything,” he told reporters. “Mayo Clinic, for everything they helped me with, and my parents and siblings for their support during this difficult time in my life.” I just wanted to thank everyone who has helped me get through this. My coach, my teammates, and all of my other coaches. They’ve been with me since the beginning, and I just want to express my gratitude.”
The Trojans’ overall struggles have been the season’s second most prominent storyline. Losses to ranked opponents such as No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 10 Gonzaga were not unexpected. However, losing to UC Irvine and Long Beach State, as well as being blown out by a talented but unranked Auburn team, hasn’t been a good look.
This is a team with a potential top-five pick in point guard Isaiah Collier, a second-round pick in backcourt mate Kobe Johnson, and James himself who may have an NBA future.
To put it simply, the Trojans have had a disappointing start to the season.
Perhaps James’ eventual removal of the minutes restriction will be beneficial. However, the Trojans have more than enough talent to compensate for his limited role. The team’s next opportunity will come on Tuesday when it travels to Alabama State.
