Steve Kerr outlined how he wanted to use Klay Thompson to defend rival forwards before the season began. The Golden State Warriors’ head coach is confident in Thompson’s ability to lessen the effect of physically imposing players by using his expertise and lower body strength.
The Warriors have deviated from that approach at times. Kerr, on the other hand, trusted Thompson to protect reigning Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday (Jan. 2). Thompson guarded Banchero for 21 half possessions, limiting him to 5-of-9 shooting and getting a block. Thompson spent 49.5% of his defensive minutes covering the Magic’s top forward.
The “Warriors Breakdown” YouTube channel recently aired a video in which they discussed how Thompson’s play against Banchero helped bring some steadiness to the Warriors’ defensive unit. They also looked at how Kerr’s approach secured Thompson’s success despite such a difficult defensive matchup.
