Draymond Green returned to the Golden State Warriors’ practice field on Sunday, one day after being reinstated by the NBA following a 12-game suspension.
Coach Steve Kerr was unsure when Green would be ready to play again after spending so much time working on himself after hitting Phoenix center Jusuf Nurkic in the face on Dec. 12.
“He’s here, he looks good, and he’s excited to be here,” Kerr said before the Warriors’ game against the Raptors. “We just had our walkthrough, so he took part in it.” It’s great to have him back.”
For the time being, Green will resume his regular shooting routine and meet with vice president of player health and performance Rick Celebrini on a daily basis to assess his fitness and readiness for game action. This will include a gradual increase in scrimmage, similar to how the Warriors do when a player returns from injury.
The emotional Warriors forward had also served a five-game suspension in November for choking Minnesota big man Rudy Gobert.
Green’s indefinite suspension was lifted on Saturday, with the league saying he “demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players” during the penalty, which began on December 14. Green has met with a counselor as well as representatives from the league, the Warriors, and the National Basketball Players Association.
Green, a key member of four Warriors championships, was ejected for the 18th time in his career — the most among active NBA players — during the Warriors’ 119-116 loss to Phoenix.
Kerr and the Warriors are hoping that Green can return and continue to be the fiery player that makes him so good while not crossing the line and going too far. Just being back at Chase Center gave him a boost of energy and lifted everyone’s spirits.
“For sure,” Kerr replied. “Everyone is thrilled to see him; it’s wonderful to have him back.” He’s one of our leaders, and he’s glad to be back, so there’s a positive vibe in there.”
