This year’s Capital One’s The Match will feature a battle of best friends.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports and Excel Sports Management announced that Golden State Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson will compete in the annual golf tournament on June 29 against Kansas City Chiefs champions Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Both Mahomes, 27, and Curry, 35, are two-time MVPs in their respective leagues and have previously competed in the golf tournament, but both superstars fell short in their first appearances.
Curry and Peyton Manning were defeated by Charles Barkley and Phil Mickelson in 2020, while Mahomes and Josh Allen were defeated by Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers last season. Both will be looking for their first tournament victory this time around.
Curry should be confident coming into the competition as a seasoned pro on the green, but Mahomes and Kelce may have an advantage because they’ve spent time together on the golf course before.
In April, the NFL stars won the 8AM Golf Invitational as a team before returning to the links in July for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.
Both teams are known for their dominance in their respective sports — Curry and Thompson have won four NBA championships with the Warriors, while Mahomes and Kelce won their second Super Bowl this year.
However, the superstar pals have become fan favorites for sports fans due to their continued friendship and teamwork, both athletic and non-athletic.
In November, Kelce told PEOPLE that he “can’t even put it into words” the impact Mahomes has had on him, and that he is amazed at “how much work we put in together and how much fun we have together.” Being able to extend that affinity onto the field is priceless for Kelce.
The Match acts as a platform for various charitable organizations. The Match has raised more than $35 million for various organizations and donated more than 27 million meals to Feeding America in seven editions.
TNT will exclusively broadcast the 12-hole event from Wynn Las Vegas on Thursday, June 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET.
