Mercedes and Williams have extended their power-unit cooperation until the conclusion of the 2030 season, which could help Kimi Antonelli’s future F1 ambitions. The Italian talent, seen as Lewis Hamilton’s long-term replacement, has been mentioned as a possible future alternative for the Grove-based club.
The relationship between the two teams has been profitable for both teams over the last decade, with Valtteri Bottas and George Russell both joining Mercedes following impressive experiences in the Williams setup.
While no technical relationship exists between the two firms, ties are expected to stay strong as long as the power unit sale is in place. Then there’s the personnel: Toto Wolff was a former executive director and stakeholder in Williams, while James Vowles, their new team principal, spent nearly a decade at Mercedes.
Wolff remarked after the latest arrangement was signed, “It is fantastic to extend our partnership with Williams Racing until 2030.” We have had a solid connection with them since the implementation of the current power unit regulations, and we hope to continue that into the future.
“Their dedication and support for our future power unit strategy is greatly appreciated.” We are excited to embrace this new rule set with the same zeal and excitement that we did in 2014, with the goal of attaining similar success.”
Maintaining a logical path into the Williams squad in 2026 and beyond is a significant win for Mercedes and Antonelli. While Vowles passed over the Mercedes-backed combo of Mick Schumacher and Frederik Vesti for 2024, the Italian teenager is a much better possibility.
Antonelli, who has already won many junior single-seater championships, will make the big move from Formula Regional European Championship to Formula 2 in 2023 and is widely regarded as the long-term successor to Hamilton’s throne at Mercedes.
His program, which will be carried out in collaboration with perennial frontrunners PREMA Racing, is intended to be a two-year one, with a foundational year in 2024 followed by an attack on the title in 2025.
This would pave the way for him to join the F1 grid in 2026, but if Hamilton isn’t ready to leave yet and Russell’s form doesn’t collapse completely, there will be no room at the Mercedes inn.
As a result, Williams might be crucial in Antonelli’s growth, offering a platform for him to grow on while he waits for Hamilton to retire from F1. In exchange, Vowles would get one of the most interesting feeder series prospects in the last decade. All that remains is for the 17-year-old to live up to the hype.
