Gilbert Arenas, social media react to Ja Morant’s obscure celebration

While he has been reminding basketball fans that he is still among the best players in the league, some fans are wondering if Ja Morant has taken any lessons from his recent, protracted suspension.

The star player for the Memphis Grizzlies is back after serving a 25-game suspension, and he scored 34 points in his season debut to win the game at the buzzer.

Even though he was just named the Western Conference Player of the Week, many are still unsure about his ability to avoid trouble.

After capturing a second video in which he appeared to brandish a gun, Morant was suspended; the first video led to an eight-game suspension.

After making an alley-oop dunk against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night, Jared Harper celebrated by extending his arms and shimmying them back and forth, a move that many fans believe to be a shooting ecstasy. Then he seemed to be imitating a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher.

Fans immediately questioned whether Morant’s celebration was fitting because they were so aware of his actions.

A former NBA player who experienced his own run-ins with the law, Gilbert Arenas, shared an old video of Andre Iguodala slapping Andrew Wiggins in the face. It appeared to be Arenas’ way of telling Morant to calm down.

In addition, Chandler Parsons criticized Morant, saying that it is “shocking that we’re talking about him possibly doing the slightest thing gun-related.”

“You need to mature… Why are you even providing us with something like this to discuss, to talk about? Talked about on FanDuel’s “Run It Back.”

“What more needs to occur before you, your loved ones, and your friends can learn? Stop doing things like this and focus on basketball, your life, and your livelihood instead of focusing on other things.”

Similar sentiments were expressed by others on social media, with some expressing quickly that Morant has not grown from his suspensions.

After the game, Morant reshared a post on X stating that he was performing the well-known touchdown dance that LSU football players perform all season long.

The Grizzlies were in New Orleans for the game, it should be mentioned. Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge is about 80 miles away from the Smoothie King Center.

Social media users who supported Morant said the dance was insignificant.

Morant even posted “you gotta rock ya hips” with a dancing and laughing emoji following the game.
