Ecclestone Commends Verstappen’s Skill, Believes He Could Win in a Ferrari or Mercedes
Former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone has showered praise on Max Verstappen, suggesting that the Dutch driver’s exceptional skills could lead to victory even in less competitive machinery. Verstappen dominated the previous F1 season, securing a record-breaking 19 wins out of 21 races with Red Bull.
Ecclestone lauded Red Bull’s F1 operations, crediting their strategic approach in overcoming Mercedes’ dominance. Expressing confidence in Verstappen’s abilities, Ecclestone stated, “You could also put him in a McLaren, and probably a Ferrari or a Mercedes, and he would still win.”
The ex-CEO criticized Mercedes for its winless campaign in the previous season, emphasizing both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s underwhelming performances. Despite acknowledging their talent, Ecclestone remarked, “Still, they shouldn’t have lost so dramatically.”
In addition to his comments on Verstappen, Ecclestone applauded McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri, highlighting the 22-year-old Australian’s impressive debut season. Piastri secured a contract extension until the end of 2026, with Ecclestone predicting a bright future for the young driver: “Young Australian Oscar Piastri impresses me the most. He will surely be a champion.”
