Bob Myers Recalls Danny Ainge’s Playful Attempt to Lure Steph Curry to the Celtics
In a surprising revelation, former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers shared an amusing anecdote about a dramatic trade proposal that could have seen Stephen Curry donning a Boston Celtics jersey. Myers quickly dismissed the idea, expressing his commitment to retaining the iconic three-point shooter.
The proposal originated from Myers’ mentor, Danny Ainge, who served as the Celtics’ general manager at the time. Myers discussed the incident on ESPN’s Woj Podcast, highlighting Ainge’s persistent inquiries about Curry over the years. Myers explained, “A GM’s job is to mine for trades, that’s a GM’s job. But [Danny] Ainge was the one always asking. I owe my career to Ainge, so I [couldn’t] be upset, ‘return the favor, give me Curry’ (laughs). Everybody knew that was not happening, so it was a good laugh.”
Ainge, known for orchestrating blockbuster trades, played a pivotal role in Myers’ career by offering him a position in the front office. Ainge’s reputation includes acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, leading the Celtics to an NBA Championship.
Reflecting on the humorous exchange, Myers acknowledged the camaraderie between the two executives. Since leaving the Warriors in 2023, Myers has transitioned to an ESPN analyst role and serves as an advisor to the Washington Commanders in the NFL.
As the Warriors navigate a challenging season, currently ranked fourth-last in the Western Conference, they prepare to face the Atlanta Hawks at the Chase Center in San Francisco on January 25. The game is scheduled for a 22:00 ET start (17:00 PT).
