Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant will have season-ending surgery to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder, the club announced on Monday.
What happened: Morant suffered an injury during practice on Saturday, according to the Grizzlies.
The two-time All-Star was in a sling for the Grizzlies’ game against Phoenix on Sunday, and the severity of the situation became clear a day later.
“Following ongoing soreness and instability, Morant underwent an MRI that revealed an underlying labral tear,” the Grizzlies announced in a statement.
Morant’s impact: This season, the 24-year-old guard is averaging 25.1 points and 8.1 assists for the Grizzlies, who are 13-23 and 13th in the Western Conference after defeating the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.
Morant recently served a 25-game ban for actions detrimental to the league. Memphis went 6-3 with the two-time All-Star back on the roster.
The Grizzlies are 7-20 sans Morant this season, are 4 1/2 games out of the last Play-In berth in the Western Conference, and will now have to go the rest of the way without their star player.
