The scoreline might suggest an overwhelming superiority of the NBA-stacked American team over their opponents, but attributing the win solely to Team USA’s talent would be overlooking the competitive strength of the global teams in the tournament.

Despite Italy’s ranking as the 10th team in the world, the way Coach Steve Kerr’s squad dismantled them may have seemed effortless. However, Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves cautioned against underestimating the quality of competition in the FIBA World Cup. In a postgame interview, Reaves emphasized the caliber of the opposing teams, noting their cohesion and chemistry that Team USA may lack.

“I think what a lot of people don’t understand is how [good] these teams are,” Reaves expressed to reporters, acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by international opponents.

While Team USA aims for victory in every game, Reaves acknowledged the unique strengths possessed by teams that have played together extensively. He highlighted the chemistry that develops over years of playing together, a factor that Team USA may not fully enjoy due to the roster’s limited time together.

Reaves’ perspective is grounded in his own experiences, having faced challenges in the tournament, including fouling out in a game against Lithuania. However, he rebounded strongly in the quarterfinals, contributing 12 points to the team’s victory over Italy.

Looking ahead, Team USA prepares to face the winner between Germany and Latvia in the semifinals, fully aware of the competitive landscape that awaits them.
