Verstappen Secures Pole Position Once Again
In a familiar turn of events, Max Verstappen dominated the qualifiers for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, clinching pole position for Red Bull Racing. Joining him on the front row is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, marking their sixth consecutive lockout of the top spots.
The qualifying session commenced with a flurry of activity as drivers aimed to set early fast laps. The Alpines led the charge followed closely by Bottas, while his teammate Zhou faced setbacks after a crash in FP3 necessitated repairs on his car.
Initially, it seemed Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri would contend for the top spot, but Verstappen swiftly asserted his dominance. Meanwhile, the Mercedes duo opted for medium compound tires for their initial runs. Lance Stroll also showed promise before having his best time deleted for track limit violations.
As the session progressed, all contenders embarked on a second run, with Verstappen notably opting for used soft tires. Zhou, unfortunately, missed his chance for a flying lap due to timing issues, joining the Alpines, Sargeant, and Bottas in elimination. Alexander Albon narrowly advanced, with Valtteri Bottas trailing close behind.
In Q2, the intensity heightened as nine cars queued up for their laps. George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Piastri were among the first out, with Kevin Magnussen completing a lap before the session was halted due to technical issues for Nico Hülkenberg. Upon the restart, Sergio Perez briefly held the fastest time before being outpaced by Verstappen and Alonso. Leclerc and Stroll also showcased strong performances.
The final minutes saw McLaren’s resurgence, with both cars securing top positions. Hamilton narrowly made it into Q3, while Bearmann narrowly missed out after a brush with the wall. Albon, Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo, and Hülkenberg faced disappointment due to various setbacks.
In the decisive Q3 session, Hamilton led the charge but struggled to match his rivals’ pace. Russell emerged as a surprise contender, outperforming his Mercedes teammate. However, it was Verstappen who ultimately claimed pole position, followed closely by Perez and Leclerc. Alonso secured a solid fourth place, while the McLarens settled for the third row.
With Mercedes on the fourth row ahead of Tsunoda and Stroll, the stage is set for an electrifying race in Jeddah.
