The Red Bull team has experienced its fair share of turbulence in recent weeks, with headlines dominated by internal discord and speculation surrounding key figures. However, a sense of calm seems to be on the horizon for the reigning champions.
Christian Horner, the team principal, expressed his surprise at the comments made by Helmut Marko, the Red Bull advisor, regarding a potential suspension following an internal investigation. Marko’s statements came in the wake of an inquiry into leaked WhatsApp messages involving Horner. Despite initial concerns, Marko’s meeting with Oliver Mintzlaff, the managing director, resolved any fears about his future, and he has been cleared to continue in his role.
“I’ll put it this way, it’s difficult to judge or let’s put it this way, ultimately, I’ll decide for myself what I do. The theoretical possibility always exists.”
The advisor also reiterated his desire for peace within the Red Bull camp, adding: “I think it’s such a complex issue. Again, we want peace in the team. This world championship will be difficult enough with 24 races and we have to concentrate on that.”
Horner emphasized that the rumored suspension was news to the team, indicating that it was an issue between Marko and Red Bull GmbH. He also acknowledged Marko’s long-standing contribution to the team and his continued motivation for Formula One at the age of 80.
Horner has since revealed his surprise regarding Marko’s initial suspension comments. He noted: “I think the rumour about suspension was as news to the team as it was to anybody else. We were quite surprised to hear that. Helmut is a contractor to Red Bull GmbH, so it was an issue between them.
“We weren’t party or part of that discussion. I’ve known Helmut since 1996, and he’s played an important role over the years. That role has evolved over the years. I’ve known him a very, very long time. Coming up to 81 years of age, he’s still obviously motivated about Formula One, which is a positive thing.”
Marko vehemently denied any involvement in the leaked messages, dismissing them as “absolute rubbish.” With his future secured and the leadership structure intact, Red Bull can focus on restoring harmony within the team.
Despite the off-track distractions, Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen, remains unfazed, securing his ninth successive Grand Prix victory in Saudi Arabia. With the team’s leadership stable and Verstappen’s dominant form on the track, Red Bull looks set to overcome its recent challenges and maintain its competitive edge in the upcoming races.
