Christian Horner, the chief of Red Bull Racing, has conceded that three-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen might consider leaving the team, despite being under contract until 2028.

Despite Verstappen’s recent victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Red Bull’s off-track issues persist. Following comments from Verstappen’s mentor Helmut Marko suggesting the Dutchman could face suspension, Verstappen himself hinted at the possibility of departing.

Marko has since reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull, but doubts linger regarding Verstappen’s future. When questioned about the potential of Verstappen’s departure, Horner emphasized that the team would not compel anyone to remain against their wishes.

Horner stated, “You can’t force somebody to be somewhere just because of a piece of paper.” He likened Verstappen’s situation to any other employee in the organization, affirming that Red Bull wouldn’t coerce someone to stay if they wanted to leave.

“If somebody didn’t want to be in this team, then we’re not going to force somebody against their will to be here.”

Despite public comments from Verstappen’s father, Jos, questioning Horner’s leadership amid allegations of inappropriate behavior, Horner maintains there are no fractures in his relationship with the 26-year-old driver.

However, Horner’s credibility has been called into question by Jos, who raised concerns during the Bahrain Grand Prix regarding accusations against Horner. Although an independent investigation cleared Horner of any wrongdoing, the controversy persists within the team.

“It is absolutely fine with Max,” the 50-year-old said. “He’s working well within the team. There’s no tension, there’s no stress. You can see how relaxed he is around the garage with everybody in the team and that’s translating to his performance on track as well.”

Verstappen, meanwhile, has defended his father’s remarks, but Horner asserts that there is no discord between himself and the star driver. Horner emphasized Verstappen’s positive demeanor within the team, stating that the issues have not affected their performance.

“So we don’t see any issues with Max. I’m aware of all that noise, but it hasn’t distracted the team from the job, and we are one team now.”

Looking ahead, Verstappen aims to continue his success at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, seeking to secure his third consecutive victory. Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding his future, Verstappen remains focused on his racing objectives.
