Oliver Bearman: From Dream Debut to Potential Future Star in Formula 1
Following his remarkable debut in Jeddah last weekend, British teenager Oliver Bearman wasted no time getting back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. Drafted in at short notice to replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, who was sidelined due to appendicitis, Bearman impressed with a solid performance, finishing seventh and even outpacing seasoned drivers like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.
Despite Sainz’s expected return for the Australian Grand Prix, Bearman remains on standby as the team’s reserve driver. However, he didn’t have to wait long for his next opportunity, as Ferrari announced his participation in testing the F1-75 car at the Fiorano track on Wednesday.
Sainz expects to be back in action in Melbourne, telling fans on social media: “I’m feeling a lot better. Obviously, now my focus is on recovering and trying to be ready, as you can imagine, for the next race. It will not be easy, it will be tight, but I think I can hopefully make it.”
Sainz, recovering from surgery, expressed optimism about returning for the next race but acknowledged the challenge ahead. Meanwhile, Bearman’s standout debut has thrust him into contention for a race seat in the 2025 season. While Ferrari’s driver lineup appears set with Charles Leclerc and the incoming Lewis Hamilton, Bearman’s talent has attracted interest from other teams, with Haas being a likely destination given his prior involvement in practice sessions.
However, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu emphasized his commitment to current drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, whose contracts expire at the end of the year. Despite Bearman’s impressive performance, Komatsu highlighted the stellar performances of Hulkenberg and Magnussen, indicating a difficult decision regarding the team’s driver lineup for the next season.
Reflecting on Bearman’s debut, Komatsu praised his performance but maintained that the team’s current drivers deserve recognition for their contributions. While Bearman’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, his debut has undoubtedly left a lasting impression, potentially paving the way for a promising career in the sport’s top tier.
