The Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors witnessed a peculiar conclusion to their thrilling matchup on Saturday night, marked by technicalities surrounding a shot clock malfunction and a contentious out-of-bounds ruling on a crucial three-pointer by LeBron James.

In a post-game Pool Report conducted with Khobi Price of the Southern California News Group, Crew Chief David Guthrie shed light on the contentious ruling concerning James’ foot positioning during his three-point attempt. 

Guthrie cited Rule 13, Section II(f)(3), which stipulates that the replay center officials scrutinize the player’s feet at the precise moment they touch the floor before releasing the shot. 

This ruling ultimately deemed James’ left foot out of bounds, thus impacting the validity of the shot.

“James’ left foot is out of bounds as he beings to shoot. Yes, it is reviewable at that time. The rule is Rule 13, Section II(f)(3): Whether the shooter committed a boundary line violation, the replay center official will only look at the position of the player’s feet at the moment they touch the floor immediately prior to the release of the shot. This can be applied during other replay triggers as well.”

Furthermore, the game witnessed another pivotal moment as the shot clock malfunctioned, affording the Golden State Warriors an extended possession beyond the standard 24 seconds. 

Guthrie clarified that while the malfunction occurred during live play, it falls outside the purview of reviewable matters. 

Despite officials’ responsibility to identify such malfunctions during gameplay, once they occur, rectification becomes unattainable.

“The shot clock malfunctioned during live play at that time and that is not a reviewable matter.” – Guthrie
