Susie Wolff, the director of the F1 academy and wife of Mercedes chief Toto Wolff, has initiated legal proceedings against the FIA following a contentious investigation. This probe, conducted by the motorsport governing body in December, raised eyebrows with its focus on the Wolffs and potential conflicts of interest.

The investigation stemmed from unverified media reports suggesting a breach of confidentiality between the couple. Both Susie Wolff and Toto Wolff, in conjunction with Mercedes and Formula 1, vehemently denied these allegations. Expressing dismay, Susie Wolff noted her deep offense at the insinuations, particularly lamenting the FIA’s failure to inform them prior to media disclosure.

Toto Wolff, who has held the positions of team principal and CEO at Mercedes since 2013, stands alongside Susie Wolff in contesting these accusations. Meanwhile, Susie, previously a test driver for Williams, assumed the role of managing director of the newly-established F1 Academy in 2023. This initiative aims to foster female participation in Formula 1, highlighting her commitment to advancing diversity within the sport.

Despite the investigation being swiftly shelved, its repercussions linger. Susie Wolff has taken decisive action, confirming her filing of a criminal complaint in French courts on March 4th.

In a statement shared on her Instagram, she decried the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the FIA’s handling of the matter. Asserting the importance of holding individuals to account for improper conduct, she emphasized the necessity of speaking out against injustice.

This development unfolds against the backdrop of the upcoming Australian Grand Prix, as Formula 1 converges on Melbourne for this weekend’s spectacle. Coinciding with Susie Wolff’s legal challenge, the FIA delivered its verdict on accusations leveled against president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. He was cleared of allegations of meddling in two F1 races last year, involving attempts to influence penalties and certification processes.
