Australian Racer Daniel Ricciardo Unveils Career-Reviving Technology Amid Grand Prix Setback

I'm asking the engineers lots of questions”: Daniel Ricciardo reflects on areas to improve after finishing P12 in home race

In a whirlwind of emotions at the Australian Grand Prix, veteran racer Daniel Ricciardo, 34, found himself battling both frustration and determination as he navigated through unexpected hurdles on the track. Despite a disappointing start from the 18th grid position due to a calamitous qualifying session, Ricciardo showcased resilience by climbing six places to secure a 12th place finish in his home race.

However, the seasoned racer’s performance fell short in comparison to his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, who clinched eighth place, leaving Ricciardo confronting a chorus of critics questioning his competitive edge. The Australian driver’s worst qualifying result at the Australian Grand Prix left him seething with disappointment after being ousted from Q1 for the first time at Albert Park.

Ricciardo’s frustration peaked when stewards nullified what seemed to be a promising final lap in Q1, citing track limit infringements at turn five. The deletion of his lap time dashed hopes of a top 10 qualification, leaving Ricciardo grappling with a cascade of emotions.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ricciardo admitted, “I felt like the frustration I kind of put aside for today. I let that go last night and I didn’t end up breaking anything. I felt like some objects were going to get smashed after qualifying, but maybe there’s a bit of calm with age, I don’t know.”

Amidst the setbacks, Ricciardo looks toward the future with optimism, banking on innovative technology to bolster his performance. Revealing a pivotal feature on his RB steering wheel, Ricciardo shared insights into how the ‘mark’ feature aids in real-time data collection during races.

“There’s things through the race where I’ll mark. We have, let’s say a button on the wheel that I can like use as a reference to say, ‘Oh, that lap I felt something there’,” Ricciardo explained. “I’m not giving away secret information, but it’s just things so I remember to tell the engineers after, so there’s a few points through the race that I marked let’s say and so it’s good to get the understanding, the data gathering and all that.”

Despite the challenging start to the season, Ricciardo remains resolute, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the ultimate goal. “It hasn’t been the best three races to start the season for sure. And especially kind of the preparation I had coming into the season, it’s definitely not where I expected to be. But it’s certainly not something that we’re going to get like rattled by or anything. We’ve just got to stay on course and I’m sure we’ll find it.”
