Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to Make Way for Youngster Ayumu Iwasa at Japanese Grand Prix FP1
Red Bull Racing has announced that Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo will be replaced by Red Bull youngster Ayumu Iwasa for the first practice session (FP1) at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix. Helmut Marko, the team’s advisor, confirmed the change, marking a significant opportunity for the under-pressure Ricciardo to give way to the promising young driver.
Iwasa, highly rated within the Red Bull ranks, will join his compatriot Yuki Tsunoda for the FP1 session, showcasing his talent at their home race at the iconic Suzuka circuit. The 22-year-old previously participated in testing for the then-Alpha Tauri team in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2023.
In accordance with Formula One regulations, teams are required to provide junior drivers with opportunities to race in at least two practice sessions per season. Red Bull’s strong partnership with Honda often sees a Japanese rookie being given the chance to demonstrate their abilities at their home race.
The Japanese Grand Prix, scheduled earlier than usual this season, presents an ideal opportunity for Red Bull to hand over the seat to Iwasa, just four races into the year.
Helmut Marko stated in his Speedway column, “On Friday, we will use our young pilot Ayumu Iwasa in practice, an All-Nippon team. What’s more, the Suzuka circuit should suit the Racing Bulls’ car.”
