Reports from Germany have surfaced, suggesting that Red Bull Racing has initiated discussions with Fernando Alonso regarding a potential move to the championship-winning team for the 2025 Formula 1 season.

According to F1 Insider, Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull Racing, has made contact with Alonso, whose contract with Aston Martin is set to expire at the end of the current season.

Alonso, who reiterated his intention to decide on his F1 future in the coming weeks, faces a pivotal moment in his illustrious twenty-year career in motorsport’s upper echelon.

At 42 years old, Alonso presents a short-term opportunity for teams like Mercedes, seeking to fill Lewis Hamilton’s vacant seat, and Red Bull, which currently has Sergio Perez contracted until the end of 2024.

Sky Germany consultant Ralf Schumacher has shed light on Red Bull’s interest in Alonso, suggesting it may be part of a contingency plan amid speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future with the team.

“Horner has always been a very, very big fan of Fernando Alonso,” commented Schumacher. “Apparently there are big intentions in the background to bring Fernando Alonso into the cockpit next year to have another strong driver if Max Verstappen leaves the team.”

The potential scenario of Verstappen’s departure could leave Red Bull with not one but two vacant seats, alongside the uncertainty surrounding Perez’s contract renewal.

While Horner has not ruled out other candidates, such as last weekend’s Australian Grand Prix winner Carlos Sainz, the situation remains speculative, and it’s plausible that both Verstappen and Alonso will continue with their respective teams.

“If Fernando Alonso were to get to Red Bull at the end of his career, and in a car with which he can win, Alonso would obviously want that.”

“And of course, you have to say today you need experienced people, you have to win from the outset.”

“Especially at Red Bull, this is something very, very important and I think Fernando Alonso would be a good alternative [to Verstappen].”
