Nuggets Shine Bright in Victory: Sinking Cavaliers with Barrage of 3-Pointers
In a masterclass display of precision shooting, the Denver Nuggets showcased their resilience and firepower, securing a commanding 130-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Ball Arena on Sunday.
The absence of star guard Jamal Murray, sidelined due to various leg ailments, didn’t deter the Nuggets’ quest for victory. Instead, they unveiled a potent strategy: simply make every single 3-pointer count, whether under pressure or in open space.
Denver’s sharpshooters connected on a remarkable 21 of 33 attempts from beyond the arc, setting a season-high shooting percentage of 63.6%. This stellar performance catapulted the Nuggets (52-23) into the thick of the Western Conference race, with the top seed tantalizingly close.
With this win, Denver officially stamped their ticket to the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season, boasting the longest active streak in the Western Conference. However, for coach Michael Malone and his squad, mere playoff appearances aren’t enough. Their sights are set on defending their title.
“That’s sustained success, which is what you all strive for,” remarked Malone. “But as I told our players: That’s cool, six years in a row, but that wasn’t a goal this year, to make the playoffs. We have a bullseye on our backs. We’re the reigning world champs. So that’s what our goal is: to repeat. It’s gonna be a hell of a challenge, but we’re all signed up for that.”
Leading the charge was Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets’ talisman, who delivered a breathtaking performance with 26 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 assists. Jokic’s dominance on the court propelled him to his 128th career triple-double, inching closer to NBA legend Magic Johnson’s record.
However, to overcome the absence of Murray and snap a two-game losing streak, the Nuggets relied on their supporting cast to capitalize on Jokic’s playmaking abilities. Role players such as Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Michael Porter Jr. stepped up, delivering crucial points from beyond the arc.
Reflecting on his stellar performance, Caldwell-Pope, who has been remarkably efficient in Denver, said, “I’m a rhythm guy. Just trying to find a good rhythm whether it’s home or away.”
Despite the challenges posed by injuries, the defending champions showcased their resilience, improving to 12-9 in Murray’s absence this season.
“I just want Jamal back,” expressed Jackson, emphasizing the team’s eagerness for Murray’s return.
Concerns over Jokic’s fitness loomed large, with Malone revealing worries about the MVP’s right wrist. Yet, Jokic’s determination saw him take to the court, contributing significantly to the Nuggets’ victory.
Malone praised Jokic’s toughness, highlighting his remarkable availability throughout his career. Jokic’s impact was felt throughout the game, propelling the Nuggets to a convincing win.
In a display of defensive prowess, the Nuggets contained the Cavaliers’ offense, limiting star guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland to a combined 18 points on 5-for-20 shooting.
Despite a sluggish start, the Nuggets’ resolute defense and prolific shooting propelled them to a resounding victory, reaffirming their status as contenders in the Western Conference.
