Spurred on by his team’s thrilling Game 1 triumph in the NBA Finals, Stephen Curry, the star of the Warriors, got into one of three cars full of Currys and headed to In and Out for burgers, fries, and shakes. They all went to his Mediterranean-style house in the basement to watch the highlights.

Upstairs, the kitchen is under renovation; work began when the playoffs began. The basement has become the center of the Curry family’s life, with Stephen, his expectant wife Ayesha, their energetic toddler Riley, his parents from North Carolina, his younger brother and sister, a few college pals, and the family Labradoodle living there. While there is a special bedroom down there for Stephen’s parents, Dell and Sonya Curry, the other guests are sharing couches and air mattresses.

“There’s a large sleepover,” Sonya Curry declared.

This is where Stephen Curry’s foundation lies, as the world’s best shooter is surrounded this week by the people who instilled in him the value of faith and family. His parents gave an explanation of how they brought up their son to be appreciative and modest, as well as to never wear sunglasses inside, in a Friday interview with the San Jose Mercury News.

The day before Stephen led the Warriors to an iconic victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, the basement even turned into Stephen’s place to nap.

As we were all chatting and playing video games, “he came home and laid down on that air mattress,” Sonya remarked. “Oh, you should go upstairs and take a nap,” I said. However, he says, “No.” He would prefer to be with us downstairs.

When her mother brought home a program from the Virginia Tech basketball team, she was the first to notice him. Prominent high school volleyball player Sonya said, “He’s the kind of man I’d like to marry,” pointing to a photo of the starting freshman.


After two years, she joined the Virginia Tech volleyball team, where the men’s basketball team and her team used the same gym. A date to the movies, spied on looks, reports of a crush, and the rest is NBA history.


Seth, 24, who plays for the NBA Development League’s Erie BayHawks, and his sister Sydel, 20, who plays volleyball for Elon University, are their other children. Stephen, 27, is the eldest of the group and prefers the soft features and hazel eyes of his mother.


During Dell Curry’s NBA career, the family relocated, but when he signed with the Hornets and they made Charlotte, North Carolina their home, they were close to the majority of their extended family. And the Currys traveled to watch the cousins play, just as aunts, uncles, and cousins traveled to watch the Curry children play on their elementary school teams.
