Since he was a young child, NBA player Klay Thompson has traveled to the Bahamas to see his family. In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, he is now returning the favor.
Thompson said on Friday on Instagram that he is collecting money to support relief efforts in the island nation. Dorian destroyed the northern islands, resulting in approximately 40 fatalities and over a thousand unaccounted for deaths.
He stated in the post that the second annual Thompson Family Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament, which is slated on September 19 and 20, will benefit relief efforts in the Bahamas to the tune of 100%.
However, the guard for the Golden State Warriors is not done yet. He declared that all funds raised would be matched by the charity.
He declared, “We will be concentrating on both immediate and long-term relief, while collaborating with local staff to deliver significant support to the area and those in need.”
Following the news, Thompson described the past several weeks as “unimaginably hard” for Bahamians in a caption.
He wrote, “People have lost everything—loved ones, families, belongings, and homes.” For these communities, everything that holds value has vanished. It will require years and years of reconstruction; this is by no means an easy remedy.
Thompson, 29, said he has been fortunate to be able to visit his family in Nassau since he was a young child. His father is from the Bahamas. He attacked the Trump administration for denying Dorian’s victims temporary protected status.
“I’ve witnessed a great deal of Americans use the Bahamas as their playground to unwind and go on vacation. And now that they have lost everything, we abandon the people who greeted us with open arms!? This cannot be justified,” he wrote.
In 2018, Klay and the other members of his immediate family—all of whom are identified as co-founders—founded the Thompson Family Foundation.
