As the 2024 Formula 1 season unfolds, Alpine finds itself grappling with a myriad of challenges that have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the team’s future.

With the looming possibility of parting ways with drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly by the year-end, coupled with operational hurdles and lackluster performance on the track, the Renault-backed squad is bracing itself for what lies ahead.

Despite the team’s official partnership with Renault, Alpine faced a disappointing start to the season with the slowest vehicle following winter tests.

Upgrades were hastily introduced at Suzuka, including a new front wing and weight cuts, yet Sunday’s race failed to yield significant improvements in Ocon and Gasly’s performance.

“We were aggressive on strategy,” revealed Ocon in an interview with Canal Plus, “but we simply weren’t fast enough to compete with the others.

It’s evident that we need more performance. We made progress in qualifying, but our race pace remains a concern. There’s still a lot of work to be done.”

Gasly echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the need for further improvements to the car. “We don’t have the performance to fight at the front,” he lamented. “We even took a step back in race pace. But I believe in the team’s capabilities. We just need to keep pushing and working hard.”

Compounding Alpine’s woes are operational challenges, notably the absence of a third chassis for races, reminiscent of Williams’ predicament.

Bruno Famin, the team principal, emphasized ongoing efforts to improve processes and organization at the Viry and Enstone facilities.

Looking towards the future, both Ocon and Gasly appear open to alternative opportunities, potentially paving the way for reserve driver Jack Doohan.

Famin highlighted Doohan’s extensive preparation program and acknowledged the dynamic nature of the driver market. “We are happy with the drivers we have,” he stated, “but we are prepared for any scenario. Jack needs to test to keep growing – let’s see what the future holds.”

As the 2025 season looms on the horizon, Alpine faces a pivotal juncture in its journey, with uncertainties abound and the need for substantial improvements becoming increasingly apparent. Only time will tell how the team navigates these challenges and emerges stronger on the other side.
