According to Mail Sport, Fernando Alonso is scheduled to make an announcement regarding his new two-year contract to remain with Aston Martin.
Beyond that, the 42-year-old twice world champion will also serve as an ambassador.
He was being pursued by other teams, including as Red Bull, who thought of him as a possible Max Verstappen successor in the event that the team’s star player decided to leave after the crisis that has engulfed them for the past two months.
It is thought that Alonso will hold media interviews late this afternoon to discuss his ongoing engagement with the Silverstone-based team, and that a statement confirming his stay is expected in approximately one hour.
Although Alonso is acknowledged as one of the best drivers of any generation, he will reach an age that no driver of today has reached when he continues to compete in Formula One after turning 44.
Alonso won the championship in 2004 and 2005, but Michael Schumacher left Ferrari at the age of 37. At 43, he eventually departed Mercedes after making a comeback.
By continuing, the Spaniard will be able to compete for Aston Martin under the new rules that will be implemented in 2026.
Honda engines will thereafter power Aston.
