Next month, an auction will take place including eight of Michael Schumacher’s Formula 1 timepieces. It is anticipated that the collection will fetch a whopping $4 million.
A number of watches from the seven-time world champion’s personal collection will be up for auction in Geneva on May 13th, during the week preceding the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, according to Christie’s Auction House.
The focal point is a rare Platinum Vagabondage 1 that was specially ordered for Schumacher by his former Ferrari boss, Jean Todt.
Todt’s helmet design, the Ferrari Prancing Horse badge, and emblems signifying his world titles are all featured on the watch, which highlights the close relationship between the German and watch designer Francois-Paul Journe.
An inscription from Todt to Schumacher for Christmas 2004 is carved on it.
According to Christie’s, the watch might fetch between $1.2 and $2.2 million.
An other intriguing piece is a customized Audemars Piguet that Todt ordered for Schumacher for Christmas 2003. It includes a tribute to his six titles at the time and his vintage red racing helmet. An estimate of £170,000 to £280,000 is attached to this watch.
Schumacher’s Rolex Daytona Paul Newman, estimated to be worth between $230,000 and $440,000, is the third watch that really sticks out. The most recognizable and well-known steel chronograph produced by the watch manufacturer is shown here.
The head of watches for Christie’s in Europe and the US, Rémi Guillemin, commented on the sale, saying: “Christie’s expresses sincere thanks to the Schumacher family for their trust in us and their wish to share these masterpieces of horology with other passionate collectors around the globe.”
“We are honored to offer these recognizable and distinctive timepieces, which belonged to one of the most renowned Formula 1 icons. A remarkable occasion for both F1 lovers and watchers. At our international shows and the auction in Geneva on May 13, we are eager to meet enthusiastic collectors.
Lewis Hamilton and Schumacher both hold the record for the most world championships won by Formula One drivers in history.
After making a brief comeback with Mercedes, he left Formula One at the end of 2012, but the following winter, a skiing accident left him severely injured and comatose. His family has since kept his condition a secret.
