Stephen Curry’s Basketball Career: A Remarkable Journey Yet to Include Olympic Games with Team USA

All he has ever done in basketball is play for the United States at the Olympics.

When he steps onto the court in the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024, that will all change in roughly four months.

The two-time FIBA Basketball World Cup champion from 2010 and 2014 has won four NBA titles and a few NBA MVP awards with the Golden State Warriors. Curry hasn’t competed in the Olympics during his illustrious career, though. One of the most important players of his time has made the decision to play for his national team once more this summer.

Curry was one of the athletes whom USA Basketball just revealed would compete in the Olympics in France this summer.

He declared, “I’m beyond excited,” to the NBA on TNT. “I have international experience having played for two different World Cup teams. But I missed it in 2021 and 2016. Thus, I’m thrilled to have this chance.”

While his exact role with the national team this summer is still unknown, it’s likely that USA coach Steve Kerr, who oversees Curry’s employment at Golden State, will decide how to best use him as the Americans attempt to win a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

“Our team is incredible, no doubt about it,” Curry remarked. “I’m familiar with Coach Kerr’s methodology. Beside him, he has an excellent coaching staff. There is no finer thrill than being in Paris and representing your nation at the highest level.”

In 1992 Dream Team forward Charles Barkley’s NBA TNT interview, Curry was asked about the possibility of making his Olympic debut at last.

“I know that with the Dream Team and your experience, it’s something you can’t really imagine because of the heights of what the Olympic buildup is, and the Opening Ceremony and going to see the other athletes do their thing in their respective competitions,” he stated. “Obviously, we want to go get the gold, and I’m really happy because this is my first time. This is the year because, at 36, I don’t know if I’ll have another one.”

The USA’s greatest Olympic title run included a stunning victory against France in Tokyo three years ago, but they also had to overcome Spain twice in the thrilling Gold Medal Games of 2008 and 2012.

The United States of America will take against Serbia, South Sudan, and the winner of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Group C on July 7 in San Juan, where they will start their quest for a fifth consecutive gold medal. Competing nations at the event are Puerto Rico, Lithuania, Italy, Mexico, Bahrain, and Côte d’Ivoire.

In a different interview with NBA TV, Curry stated, “We have a great team coming.” “Obviously, we are aware that nothing is certain. You bring the appropriate energy and you can’t take anything for granted, so I’m pleased about everything and this summer should be enjoyable.”

Curry is still among the game’s best players at the age of 36. He recently won the Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year award for 2023–24, defeating both Canada’s Shai Gilgeous Alexander and the USA’s former star DeMar DeRozan.

With 189 points, Curry led the league in clutch scoring, which is defined as points scored in overtime or the final five minutes of a fourth quarter when there is a five-point or smaller difference in the score between the two teams.
