Just one day after it was revealed that Ja Morant would be permitted to travel with the club during his absence from preseason games and games that take place essentially throughout the first quarter of the regular season, he was able to rehearse with teammates.
While he waits to return to the Grizzlies lineup, Morant is free to shoot around and train with other players. In June, the NBA punished him for 25 games without pay for brandishing a firearm in a viral video for the second time.
When the Grizzlies play the New Orleans Pelicans on December 19, the 24-year-old is eligible to make a comeback.
On Media Day, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins stated, “He’s going to be around us full-time.”
Jenkins continued, “We’re going to have to navigate a unique circumstance.”
“I believe that everyone is aware of it and will be more ready for the season knowing that he is training hard and remains fully integrated with the team, and our group will be conducting business as usual.”
Morant will lose roughly $10.2 million as a result of the suspension, based on his $33.5 million contract for 2023–2024.
In the Instagram Live video, Morant was seen sitting in the passenger seat of a car, listening to rap music, and brandishing a revolver.
Following the release of the video on May 13, the Grizzlies suspended the guard from all team activities.
Morant was spotted holding a gun on social media for the second time in three months.
After a 113-97 loss to the Nuggets on March 4, he recorded himself brandishing a gun in a Denver strip club. This event resulted in an eight-game suspension and therapy.
The 24-year-old Morant will begin his fifth season in Memphis after being chosen by the Grizzlies with the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
In 61 games (59 starts), the two-time All-Star center averaged 26.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in 2022–23.
