Monday night’s Game 4 of the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics second-round series featured LeBron James, whose presence is sure to spark speculation about the superstar’s future.
James spent two spells in Cleveland before choosing to become a free agency this summer and opt out of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Before departing the Cavaliers two years later, he guided them to their lone NBA championship in 2016. Cleveland battled bravely without their injured star, Donovan Mitchell, but ultimately lost on Monday night, 109-102.
James, the all-time scoring leader in the league, continues to reside close to his hometown of Akron. Since departing in 2018, he has been to Cleveland numerous times, but he has not gone to a Cavs game.
James and his wife Savannah, who was conspicuously sporting a faux fur hat, and agent Rich Paul took courtside seats as soon as the game started.
When he appeared on the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse scoreboard during a timeout, he was met with a standing ovation. After giving the assembly his acknowledgement, King James pretended to place a crown on his head.
This year’s postseason was brief for the 39-year-old because the Lakers were eliminated in the opening round by the reigning champion Denver Nuggets.
After the series, James made it apparent that he was keeping all of his options open and had not decided what to do next.
James has previously shown interest in playing with his oldest son, Bronny, a 19-year-old who played at USC the previous season and recently submitted an application for the draft this year.
After suffering a heart arrest in the summer of last year, the younger James, 19, was given the all-clear by the league’s medical staff to take part in the pre-draft combine in Chicago on Monday. Although he has little chance of being selected in the draft, if he manages to make it into the league, he should be selected as early as the second round.
James is a four-time league MVP, champion, and 20-time All-Star.
Before joining Miami as a free agent in 2010, he played seven seasons with the Cavaliers after being selected by Cleveland with the first overall pick in the 2003 draft.
After rejoining the Cavs in 2014, he helped them get to the NBA Finals four times in a row, all against Golden State.
Although James had previously expressed his wish to play beside his son, in recent weeks he has become more detached from his ideal situation.
