Lando Norris, the winner of the Lorenzo Bandini trophy in 2023, has been replaced by George Russell as the 2024 winner.
Russell of Mercedes won the award for his efforts. It is given to a driver or team in racing who exhibits a “commendable performance,” which may not necessarily correspond to the season’s outcomes.
The prize bears Bandini’s name, a former grand prix winner who passed away from burns suffered in an accident at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix after colliding at the seaside chicane.
A panel of twelve journalists and former F1 team members choose the winner, which is a ceramic copy of Bandini’s Ferrari 312 car with the #18.
It coincides with Mercedes’s 100th anniversary of winning the 1924 Targa Florio, an event held on Sicily’s public roads that was eventually abandoned in 1977 due to safety concerns despite being a race that is currently a part of the Italian Rally championship.
World champions Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Max Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, and Jacques Villeneuve are among the previous recipients of the medal, together with the Mercedes and Ferrari teams.
