Many experts speculate that the race has narrowed to two main candidates: New Orleans Pelicans associate coach James Borrego and recent NBA retiree J.J. Redick.

On his podcast, “Brian Windhorst & the Hoop Collective,” Windhorst reported that the Lakers are “not close” to naming a head coach, despite strong indications that J.J. Redick is a leading candidate. Windhorst mentioned, “There is information out there otherwise involving J.J. Redick. I will tell you my information is scattered. I have some people saying this is J.J. Redick’s job that I trust.”

James Borrego has also had multiple meetings with the Lakers, making him a viable candidate. However, Shams Charania of The Athletic suggests that the Lakers are “zeroing in” on Redick, describing the team as “infatuated” with him. Sources believe Redick could command the locker room, hold players accountable, and bring much-needed structure and organization.

What’s Delaying the Decision?

If the Lakers are indeed favoring Redick, why hasn’t a deal been reached? Windhorst posits that Redick’s current obligations with ESPN, particularly his role in broadcasting the NBA Finals, might be the reason for the delay. This implies that once the Finals conclude, Redick could quickly step into the coaching role.

Borrego’s Prospects Elsewhere

If the Lakers’ interest in Borrego is genuine, they may need to act fast. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that Borrego is among the candidates scheduled to interview for the Cavaliers’ head coaching position.
